These residences, known as Patent buildings, were very basic, generally a single room in the 16 to 20 foot range with a cooking/heating fireplace on one end and a sleeping loft area above. A small step-off porch in front and/or back gave the buildings added utility. Our kitchen is a Patent building with only beams remaining from what was once a loft bedroom. Re-purposed, rough-sawn oak flooring and original moldings give it authenticity, as does the field stone fireplace. Cynthia and I both like to cook so we needed a real stove, two ovens, extra refrigeration and plenty of counter space a bit of a challenge in a relatively small room that also features storage and eat-in accommodations. Somehow it all works, but it was the most nerve-racking part of the overall design because you really don't know if it will work until it s already completed. <o:p></o:p></span></p> </div> </td> </tr> </table> </div> <table class=MsoNormalTable border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 width=554 style='width:415.5pt;border-collapse:collapse;mso-yfti-tbllook:1184'> <tr style='mso-yfti-irow:0;mso-yfti-firstrow:yes;mso-yfti-lastrow:yes'> <td width=554 style='width:415.5pt;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in'> <div align=center> <table class=MsoNormalTable border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 width=476 style='width:357.0pt;border-collapse:collapse;mso-yfti-tbllook: 1184'> <tr style='mso-yfti-irow:0;mso-yfti-firstrow:yes;mso-yfti-lastrow:yes'> <td valign=top style='padding:0in 0in 0in 0in'> <div style='margin-bottom:13.2pt'> <p class=MsoNormal align=center style='text-align:center'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'><img border=0 width=228 height=305 id="_x0000_i1028" src="http://images.madmimi.com/promotion_images/0162/8833/original/CIMG2556.JPG" style='border-bottom-width:0in;border-left-width:0in;border-right-width: 0in;border-top-width:0in'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:.25in; Their size, style, and location speak volumes about the building's quality and authenticity. We used 6 over 6 double hung for the Georgian building and 6 over 9 double hung for the Patent house. Earlier I said you have to determine at the start of a replica project whether you are building a house or a museum. Windows are one of the compromises you make if you are taking the house path. We found Jeldwen products that were very close to original dimensions and have a maintenance free exterior finish that is pretty convincing. Whenever I reach this type of critical decision, I do the best I can and then rationalize that, except in Williamsburg, even a well kept house would have upgraded certain features over time. <o:p></o:p></span></p> </div> </td> </tr> </table> </div> <table class=MsoNormalTable border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 width=554 style='width:415.5pt;border-collapse:collapse;mso-yfti-tbllook:1184'> <tr style='mso-yfti-irow:0;mso-yfti-firstrow:yes;mso-yfti-lastrow:yes'> <td width=554 style='width:415.5pt;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in'> <div> <p style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:15.6pt; margin-left:0in;line-height:12.0pt;vertical-align:top'><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; color:#3A352A'>" <strong><span style='font-family:"Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"'>Most of your windows are left naked. Further, I invariably treasure things that are completely beyond my means. I started having furniture built in my early 20's after an opening night visit to the New York Antique Show at the Armory. There, I came upon an oval Burl Wood dining table that I could not live without. Naively I asked the price which turned out to be $125,000 then, about the cost of a four year college education. A few months later I had my table in Bird's Eye Maple with a Cherry base built by a craftsman from Winterthur. Today, about 90% of what we own has been replicated by craftsmen who often restore furniture for some of the finer museums. I love the problem solving involved with how to how to keep them standing over time; how best to use the space within; and how to complete them within budget. This is our first new house - all the others have been existing structures that needed restoration and/or modification. I don't think you need to be an architect to be a restorer, but in new construction those skills are definitely an asset. For me, design is a subtractive process of continually paring down until you have only the minimum structure and detail required to meet the project objectives. This is an awkward concept for most of us non professionals who tend to think about projects additively, but a skill that comes naturally to professional designers and architects. Cynthia and I build for ourselves with only minimal consideration to what a future owner might want. However, a good designer has the added dimension of having to extract, translate and best execute what is really in the client's head I'm not sure I'm cut out to do that for a living. <o:p></o:p></span></p> </div> </td> </tr> </table> <div> <p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Helvetica","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";display:none;mso-hide:all'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <table class=MsoNormalTable border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 width=554 style='width:415.5pt;border-collapse:collapse;mso-yfti-tbllook:1184; border-spacing: 0'> <tr style='mso-yfti-irow:0;mso-yfti-firstrow:yes;mso-yfti-lastrow:yes'> <td width=554 style='width:415.5pt;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in'> <table class=MsoNormalTable border=0 cellspacing=0 cellpadding=0 align=right width=268 style='width:201.0pt;border-collapse:collapse; mso-yfti-tbllook:1184;mso-table-lspace:2.25pt;mso-table-rspace:2.25pt; mso-table-tspace:5.0pt;margin-top:2.75pt;mso-table-bspace:5.0pt; margin-bottom:2.75pt;mso-table-anchor-vertical:paragraph;mso-table-anchor-horizontal: column;mso-table-left:right;mso-table-top:middle;border-spacing: 0; float:right' height=201> <tr style='mso-yfti-irow:0;mso-yfti-firstrow:yes;mso-yfti-lastrow:yes'> <td style='padding:0in 0in 0in 0in'> <div style='margin-left:15.0pt;margin-top:3.0pt;margin-bottom:11.25pt; float:right'> <p class=MsoNormal><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'><img border=0 width=268 height=201 id="_x0000_i1035" src="http://images.madmimi.com/promotion_images/0162/8793/original/CIMG2547.JPG" style='border-bottom-width:0in;border-left-width:0in;border-right-width: 0in;border-top-width:0in'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:.25in; margin-left:0in;line-height:12.0pt'><i><span style='font-size:8.5pt; font-family:"Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";color:#3A352A'>Cynthia's vegetable and rose gardens in front of the servant's quarters (aka the &quot;car barn.&quot;)<o:p></o:p></span></i></p> </div> </td> </tr> </table> <div> <p style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:15.6pt; margin-left:0in;line-height:12.0pt;vertical-align:top'><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; color:#3A352A'>Cynthia has always been in charge of gardens and landscape. Too often I see folks concentrating on door hinges or lighting when they should be thinking window placement and whether they really need a separate dog grooming room. We also do our own painting because we don't know what our colors will be until we have lived in the rooms under differing lighting conditions. In other words, a project does not have to end on the day the CO is issued. Some things take more time to get right. We waited a year to build the outbuilding because we needed extra time for research and to just think about it after all, it was appending to important work we had already created. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:0in;margin-bottom:15.6pt; margin-left:0in;line-height:12.0pt;vertical-align:top'><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Trebuchet MS","sans-serif"; color:#3A352A'>I believe in using expert advice, regardless of the stature of the expert.
