State conservation programs enticed us to fence off the streams and forest, to install seven underground watering stations for the cattle, and to plant 3,500 native trees in the now protected areas. The stable is a modest carriage barn from the mid 1800s and the utility building behind the house is a facsimile servant's quarters from the same period. The latter is based on drawings we made while researching buildings in Williamsburg. When you get into a project like this it's important to start with the question:  Am I building a house, a museum, or both? Also, Montpelier, James Madison's family home, was undergoing a world-class restoration at the time and we were invited to visit as often as we liked to document their progress  they were also incredibly generous about sharing their restoration techniques and resources for materials. Williamsburg is only 2 hours from Orange and a few day trips gave us enough material to fill a sketch pad. We share a walk-in closet in the master bedroom which has pull-down stairs to the attic. The laundry and other storage are hidden in closets along the upstairs hall.
