Kitchen
Kitchen Project - Far Hills, New Jersey

This New Jersey hunt country house which began life as a farmhouse over a century ago had been expanded several times but the kitchen had not been renovated since the 1950's.

In addition to requirements for generous storage and traffic flow to handle extensive entertaining, the client wished for custom, handmade cabinets for a "hunt country feel." And the cabinets were to coordinate with a favorite red, floral, print, "Whippet," from Lee Jofa Fabrics!

Three adjoining rooms were combined to create two spaces. During demolition a wall was removed between the original kitchen and an eating area to create an open plan incorporating a large, angled island which serves as both functional workspace and as a display area for part of the client's large collection of hunt country china. An unattractive laundry room located between the dining room and kitchen was converted to an elegant butler's pantry incorporating wine refrigeration and ice makers, and additional china and crystal display. New oak flooring was carefully installed to accommodate the house's original uneven foundation. Adding light to a formerly dark space, new windows and French doors lead to a new patio which connects the kitchen, butler's pantry and dining room for al fresco entertaining of equestrian friends.
