Residence - Middleburg, VA
Project: Bedroom for a recent college graduate.
Among the major requirements of this unusual space were the directives to create an elegant, functional room utilizing its niches and angles and to reuse the existing French style furnishings and fabrics that had been in the mother's room as a young girl.
Inspired by the previously painted ceiling and the fabulous exterior views, Nancy West, ASID of Noble West Design fashioned a cloud like bower. The bed, now placed perpendicular to an alcove wall, received an asymmetrical sheer "dotted swiss" Kravet fabric canopy while the wall behind was draped in the same shirred fabric and a soft blue Fabricut silk plaid. Window treatments were of the same fabrics with the shaped valence reiterating the curves of the distant hills. A dressing table skirt made from existing curtains was topped with the same blue silk behind the bed. A ready made bedspread from a Martha Stewart collection was redesigned and refitted to the exact size of bed. Bedside tables found locally were glazed with a pale blue tint to provide "age" and to coordinate with the fabrics. A favorite grandmother's chair and the headboard were reupholstered in an ottoman fabric by Brunschwig & Fils with trim from Calico Corners. Carpeting is by Stark. A glass top placed on two glazed wood file cabinets created a simple work surface while a French style bookcase completed the new organization.
